Early life and education

On September 21, 1950, she was born in Chakwal, Punjab, Pakistan. She was raised in Neela village, Chakwal district, before moving to Lahore to attend the Convent of Jesus and Mary. She married in 1972.

In 1978, she earned her MBBS from Fatima Jinnah Medical University in Lahore. In 1984, she moved to the United Kingdom and enrolled in the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, where she received an MRCOG in 1989 and an FRCOG in 1999.

She then received her FCPS degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan in Karachi.

Family

Her husband’s name is Rashid Nabi Malik. Her husband is from a prominent political family. He is the son of Malik Ghulam Nabi, the former Punjab Education Minister. Her brother-in-law, Shahid Nabi Malik, remained a member of the Pakistan Peoples Party and ran as their candidate in the general elections in 1990 and 1993.

Professional career

She served as President of the Pakistan Medical Association Lahore from 1998 to 2000. From 2008 to 2010, she was the president of the Pakistan Medical Association Punjab, as well as the head of the Task Force Women Development and the Punjab Women Health Committee.

She is a trained gynaecologist who previously served as the department chair of obstetrics and gynaecology at King Edward Medical University. She has also worked at Rawalpindi Medical University, Fatima Jinnah Medical University, and Central Park Medical College, where she was in charge of the Genealogy department.

Political career

Rashid left the government in 2010 and joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on the advice of her father-in-law (PTI).

She ran for a seat in Pakistan’s National Assembly as a PTI candidate from NA-120 (Lahore-III), but was defeated by then-Pakistan Muslim League (N) President Nawaz Sharif, who received 91,683 votes.

The NA-120 (Lahore-III) seat became vacant after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified as a Member of the National Assembly by the Supreme Court of Pakistan following the decision in the Panama Papers case, and by-elections were held in the constituency. Rashid was nominated by the PTI to contest in the National Assembly by-elections in September 2017. Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif defeated her by a margin of 14,646 votes in the election.

She ran from the same constituency, which had been renamed NA-125, in the 2018 elections (Lahore-III). She received 105,857 votes, but was defeated by Waheed Alam Khan of the PML-N, who received 122,327 votes. She was later elected as a PTI candidate to the Punjab Provincial Assembly on a reserved seat for women.

On August 27, 2018, she was appointed as Provincial Minister of Punjab for elementary and secondary healthcare, with additional ministerial portfolios of specialist healthcare and medical education, to Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar’s provincial Punjab cabinet.
