In a gruelling match at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre on Saturday, Pakistan’s handsome young squash player Muhammad Hamza Khan defeated France’s Melvil Scianimanico 11-8, 11-4, 10-12, 9-11, and 13-11 to advance to the World Junior Squash Championship final, becoming the first player from his nation to do so in the previous 15 years.

In the semi-final, Hamza, who had also won a bronze medal at the 2022 World Junior Championship, defeated Scianimanico in 83 minutes. There were several tense moments in the match when Hamza and his French rival were neck and neck.

However, Hamza persevered and eventually defeated Scianimanico.

Egypt’s Mohamed Zakaria, who advanced to the final as the youngest player, will now face Hamza.

In his semifinal match, Zakaria overcame Salman Kahlil 11-7, 11-6, and 11-6.

The World Junior Squash Championship final showcases the history of two countries that have historically produced many legendary squash players.

This is a historic time for the nation since Hamza has a chance to win the competition for the first time since Jansher Khan did so 37 years ago. Since joining the national circuit in 2016, Hamza, now 17, has been steadily improving. In the year 2021, he also captured the US U-19 championship.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, his father, Niazullah, said he was extremely proud of his son but could only watch him play in the semifinals on television.

“Unfortunately, I am in Peshawar and was unable to join him. Hamza is by himself, unaccompanied by his coach or anyones else, yet he has truly made me proud.

Niazullah, who also played squash and first trained Hamza, said, “I want to see him become the junior world champion and also the world champion in the future.”

Hamza has always enjoyed squash, even as a small child. He played at our house, bouncing the ball off the walls. Now, he is fulfilling his dream.

Despite the fact that Hamza stole the show in Melbourne, a representative of the Pakistan Squash Federation spoke in his place during the presentation ceremony.

The Express Tribune, however, inquired as to whether Hamza had any advice for his supporters back home.

Niazullah stated, “Hamza told me that he is optimistic and positive about winning the crown. He promised to give it his all, but in the end, winning and losing are only parts of the game. I am pleased that he has guaranteed Pakistan a silver medal, whatever the outcome of the competition.

Amir Atlas Khan, a former champion, was overjoyed by Haza’s victory. Speaking to The Express Tribune, he added, “This is a great moment for Pakistan, and I am so happy to see Hamza reach the final.”

The last Pakistani to participate in a World Junior Championship final was Amir, who did it 15 years ago.

“I think Hamza has a good chance of winning the championship. It was won by Jansher more than 31 years ago. I had a chance to win it as well, but I was unable to. Hamza should, therefore, genuinely lift the prize. I believe this will motivate other children to perform better as well.

The British Junior 2020 champion ship was won by Hamza on January 6, 2020, over a number of top-ranked squash players from around the world.
